Concert Review: Cherie Currie Live at The Magic Bag

Cherie Currie, formerly of The Runaways, brought her kick-ass solo tour to the Magic Bag in Ferndale, MI on August 8th and made quite a statement.  After years of inactivity, she is ready to ROCK again and proved it Thursday night with a short and mighty set of Runaways classics mixed with a few surprises.

Currie looks and sounds great fronting a crack band which includes her son on guitar. Cherie kept these guys on their toes by mixing up the pre-printed set list while "feeling out" the crowd.  The Runaways selections delighted the throwback crowd with Currie encouraging the eager fans to sing-along with her, extending the mic into the front rows on multiple songs.
(Yes, that WAS me on on the chorus of 'Rock and Roll'.  It was "Alright!")

An audience request led to a great rendition of 'Heartbeat'
and of course 'Cherry Bomb' went over HUGE. But the highlight for me was hearing some new music from this legendary Front Woman. Currie introduced a few new tracks from a yet-to-be released finished album due to come out "soon, someday, hopefully".

'Mr X' was a killer rocker, recorded originally with Matt Sorum, Slash and Duff McKagan.
Wow, that sounds promising, huh?!
'Rock N' Roll Oblivion' was outstanding and, according to Currie, it's a song to honor the bond and sense of long-standing solidarity with her fans.

Cherie Currie's Magic Bag Set List, not necessarily in that order!

Cherie Currie has led an amazing and sometimes chaotic life but there seems to be a sense of peace to her stage presence in 2013.  She floats between genuine banter and belting out vocals, all with a smile on her face.  The show ended with an appropriately rousing version of David Bowie's 'Rebel Rebel' leaving the audience wanting more so we were all graciously requested to join her in one of "Detroit's back alleys" after the show. True to her word, Currie stayed signing autographs and taking pictures with everyone who took her up on the invitation.

Memo to Joan Jett:  Reunite with The Runaways NOW!
Don't let schedules and business and life get in the way any longer...
Call Lita, Call Cherie, Call Mickie, Jackie or Vicki.
Hire a drummer and HIT THE ROAD for the fans!
Cherie Currie is ready to ROCK and so are we.

Opening the show was local favorites, White Shag.  The rocking trio was a perfect choice to warm up the crowd and they seem to be ready for bigger and better things. Laura, Jorge and Joe play fast and heavy and good old fashioned In-Your-Face Detroit Rock N' Roll.  If you can catch up with them soon...DO IT!
