'GREAT' is an adjective thrown around far too easily and far too often when describing Rock N' Roll music. Too many groups are deemed 'GREAT' by the critics, their fans or even by the band members themselves. With each passing decade, another list of the 'GREATEST' bands is inevitable published.

Sometimes just the label itself can be the GREAT kiss of death.

I humbly give you: THE REPLACEMENTS.

Bob Mehr has just written a GREAT book about the GREATEST band that never was.

Trouble Boys: The True Story of the Replacements properly lays out and documents the Rise and Fall and Stumble and Fall and Fall again of rock's anti-heroes from the Midwest.

Paul Westerberg, Tommy Stinson, Chris Mars and Bob Stinson should have dominated the 1980's music scene with their exciting mix of GREAT talent, GREAT songs and GREAT live performances.

Except they didn't.

The true story of the Replacements is an extraordinarily messy one and not for the faint of heart. Mehr smartly gives the reader inside access and a backstage pass to all the gory details without passing judgement.

After enjoying the hell out of this release, I've decided to categorize and summarize for simplicity:

THE FIVE STAGES OF REPLACEMENTS FANDOM

#1. ENVY

It's always simple to ENVY a rockstar. Who wouldn't want to socialize with other like-minded artists and be courted by record-label execs? Hang with Peter Buck of R.E.M. and date women way out of your league? Hear yourself on the radio and step up to the microphone in front of an adoring crowd?

In the early days, it seemed too easy for these guys. Upon hearing the Sex Pistols, Paul felt vindicated...'"Forget these guitar solos I've been trying to play. I'm gonna lead a fucking band. Real rock-and-roll is not complicated. To me, the soul of rock-and-roll is mistakes. In general, music that's flawless is usually uninspired" adding "We'd like to become famous without being professional. Maybe like a giant cult."'

#2. ANGER

Upon learning the extent and brutal truth about their legendary drinking escapades, frustration and ANGER boil over at every sip of the self-sabotaging poison. Alcohol positively turned dreams into nightmares at an astounding speed with this bunch. Upon drinking vodka for the first time on a dare at age 13, Paul remembers '"What I felt was immediate release from all anxiety...the elixir of life that makes you calm and fearless...that's the alcoholic trigger."

Chris laments '"That was the glue that held us - ol' Jack Daniels." And Westerberg adds that his bandmates '"...weren't heavy fall-down drunks when I met them. We learned to be that together."'

Of course Tommy couldn't and didn't drink at the start, mostly because he WAS TWELVE, but slid headfirst into the haze just to fit in. The disaster stories quickly pile up and start to run together leaving no doubt about the inevitable outcome.

#3. PITY

I'm sure it seemed cool at the time to be "banned" from SNL, but its a PITY how fast they fell from grace. 'They had become "legends" without ever really becoming stars, an epitaph as unlikely as their beginnings...children of war veteran and alcoholics, from families steeped in mental illness and abuse, products of Midwestern recalcitrance and repression.'

The worst byproduct of excess was the abandonment of Bob Stinson. His bi-polar and borderline schizophrenic behavior deteriorated the band's own mental chemistry to the point of no return. The decision had to come down to Tommy. '"None of us wanted to get rid of Bob, we were all against it. But there was a fact there: we couldn't keep going the way we were. Well...I guess we gotta fire my brother."'

After years of survial without the Replacements, Stinson died in 1995. '...the coroner's final report would contradict the initial suspicions - not an OD but organ failure. Just thirty-five, Bob Stinson died of natural causes, his body and heart simply worn out.'

#4. APATHY

As a fan, it's bound to happen...APATHY. Ruined opportunities for success onstage, in studio and in their personal lives abound. A bright future is wasted beyond belief in the sober daylight of the public eye. And I do mean WASTED. They could of had it all, but they blew it with no one else to blame but themselves. Solo careers, new bands, new relationships. Blah, blah, blah. Oh well, move on. Nothing to see here.

Its hard to stay focused when even the band loses interest with itself. '"I can't mean it every night," admitted Westerberg, "I just can't fuckin' mean it everynight."'

Before his untimely demise, Bob told a friend '"I was a Replacement, I was a Replacement," repeated Stinson, almost to himself, "I was always a Replacement." "It's true: we were all Replacements," said Westerberg. "To a man, we felt that way. We lived that way. Bob died that way. It's a burden to be a Replacement."'

#5. ACCEPTANCE

Time is said to heal all wounds, some of them at least, and ACCEPTANCE comes with maturity. Paul accepts the fact of R.E.M.'s spectacular and meteoric 'ascension to the ranks of mega-stars. "I've had to mention them in every interview I've done since 1981," he said wearily. "The problem is, they don't have to mention (the Replacements). They simply don't have to acknowledge us anymore. They won."'

I accept the fact that Tommy went on to join GUNS N' ROSES and toured the world with Axl Rose's merry band of "replacements."

I accept the fact that Chris Mars went on to an art career and never looked back.

I accept the fact that Paul and Tommy reunited for a batch of concerts in 2015 billed as the Replacements 'Back By Unpopular Demand' tour. And that the tour ended early.

I also accept the fact that this book is ultimately a tale of love. The true love story of two unlikely characters, Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson, brought together by fate to chase a childhood dream.

Sordid and beautiful, tragic and classic.

Fortunately, I was able to see one of the reunion shows in 2015 before this legendary group imploded for good. The Fillmore Detroit show was filled with GREAT attitude, GREAT musicianship, GREAT cover tunes, some cigarette smoke and a tent.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Replacements.

Celebrating his birthday a short week ago, an eternity ago...

Images and music and weeping and thinking...

Profoundly impacting without noticing, without intruding...

A lifetime of art seared in chapters for the ages...

David Bowie on my brain, in my blood, in my heart...

The man who stood out...

Who changed constantly yet remained so familiar...

Dropping in on my world to alter it, improve it, then leave it.

Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars on screen in stereo alone...

In an MSU auditorium surrounded by friends, none could I call my own...

Serious Moonlight at Joe Louis a day after The Police...

Then Glass Spider in Atlanta, best birthday gift ever from the ex...

A WRIF sticker kept since 1983 without just the right place...

A few nights ago, in memoriam, slapped on my guitar case.

He was sooooo very good to us, this visionary who pleased...

Gone but not forgotten...

But Gone.
Locked in a Back To The Future Time Warp perhaps...

Concert tickets galore for a six month frenetic run...

Like a teen without a care and money to spare...

Vaulting from show to show dancing on air...

Summertime rocks straight away into fall...

And Detroit Rock City greedily welcomes them all...

Not my first time to worship these gods of the past...

Yet, oddly, only the youngest promise retirement at last.

Fire and Brimstone or Pyro and Flash...

Call it what you will, but serve it up fast...

AC/DC, Alice Cooper, Motley Crue, Sir Paul McCartney too...

The Ace of Spades plus a Full House at Pine Knob will do...

Van Halen, The J. Geils Band and Motorhead kick it hard...

Rolling Stones still remain undisputed Champions of The World.

Are these bands for real, mere mortals, can they truly exist...

With ears ringing, head hurting and heart racing for certain...

Rock N' Roll is NOT dead and exactly what year IS this?

Motley Crue brought their Final Tour to Toledo Ohio last night, October 13th,
and executed a DAMN PROPER ROCK AND ROLL SHOW.
And like a moth to a flame...I was there.

Back at the first date on this "All Bad Things Must Come To An End" Tour in Grand Rapids MI, I witnessed an absolute debacle and was so utterly disgusted that I vowed to never see the band again. If this was truly the last tour, then goodbye and good riddance.
It was THAT bad.
If you care to revisit my review post you can find it BY CLICKING HERE.
You've been warned.

Since I thoroughly ripped that disastrous show on this blog, I am righteously obligated to follow up with my thoughts on last night...

MIGHTY REDEMPTION, MOTLEY CRUE STILL KICKS ASS.

Thanks to a last minute face value buy on Ticketmaster, my son and I stood 4th Row in what must have been unsold VIP tickets directly in front of the action. KUDOS to The Cringe for a cool and crisp opening set before Alice Cooper did what he always does best...ENTERTAIN. Cooper is quite simply the Greatest Showman Of All Time and The Crue is brilliant for keeping on the bill.

But the evening belonged to The Crue and they brought a finely tuned adrenaline-pumping ear-splitting bash of flash and fire to the intimate Huntington Arena. This show was PACKED with all the Greatest Hits and even more of the Fire and Explosions and downright WOW that we've come to expect from these guys. I cannot stress the difference in professionalism and delivery between this Toledo show and the Grand Rapids show.

The massive stage is even better now with wings that fly Nikki and Vince up and over the crowd while lifting Mick straight up in the air. And yeah, The Crucifly still delights and amazes. The band is working flawlessly together and it really makes for an excellent night of bombastic Rock N' Roll.

Here's my biggest compliment of the night and one that makes me very, very happy to report:
Vince Neil sounded great! In fact, it's the best I've ever heard him sing. He worked it HARD and seemed comfortable and dare I say pleased with himself. HELL YES VINCE!

It just had to end this way for me. And for my son.
I'm so appreciative that the universe presented this opportunity to me and I'm humbled and awed.
Thank you Vince, Tommy, Mick and Nikki.
If that was the last time we ever see you together onstage around these parts, then so be it.
Last night was a proper and fitting send off to one of the most fascinating and entertaining rock bands of all time.
Well done boys, well done.

Punk Rock Lesson No. 1: Real Men Read Books.

Punk Rock Lesson No. 2: Real Men Write Books.

Duff McKagan, the wisest man in Rock N' Roll, has done it again.
The original Guns N' Roses bassist and current real life husband actual Rockstar Dad has written the book that all men must read. That's right...ALL MEN.
And don't give me that crap that guys don't read books.

(See above Lesson No. 1)

Duff McKagan: How To Be A Man (and other illusions)

How to Be A Man (and other illusions) is Duff's second book, a follow-up if you will to the wickedly inspiring It's So Easy (and other lies) that was published in 2012. As a 1970's punk rock pinball kid from Seattle, McKagan bought himself a $300 Ford Maverick as a teenager, drove himself to Los Angeles and landed straight into the Rock N' Roll history books by co-writing some of Guns N' Roses biggest hits. Needless to say his twenties were filled with debauchery, drugs, sex, alcohol and drugs. And alcohol. And drugs. Get the picture?!

But now at fifty, Duff has figured out life's most important and vital skill...SURVIVAL.
Fortunately he's generous enough to share his wisdom with us, the readers, in an easy to swallow textbook of advice and guidance. The common theme here is: LOVE. McKagan is happily married with two wonderful daughters and he's not afraid to be proud of his family.

Duff on Marriage: "Find a good woman...Be loyal!...Hold her close!...who you have kids with will always be the very most important decision you ever make. They should really teach that stuff at school."

Duff on Pets: "Get A Dog...it will make you a better man."

Duff on Being THE Man: "Listen...Do the dishes...Set a good example...Educate yourself...Don't be a pussy...and Evolve."

Duff on Sobriety: "Resentment is a brutal thing. In the first year or two after I got sober, I found myself swimming in a dense, black swamp of resentment and regret." "But of course, in the end, sobriety and the choices that I make when sober are really and truly mine." "Get Sober."

Sure, we get some dirt mixed in with the advice along the way too.

Duff on Checking into Hotels under Assumed Names: "Slash and I dubbed ourselves the Likesheet brothers. 'Luke Likesheet' and 'Phil Likesheet'...from what I can remember, we had some fun." Although basic nourishment must not have been a priority...
"Now that I think about it, I don't remember Slash and me eating food in those early days."(!)

Duff on The 100 Albums Every Man Should Own: "...we could argue about the list and you could turn me on to some of your favorite bands that I've missed. So feel free to ping me @DuffMcKagan on Twitter and we'll have a go at it." I would love to debate this list (The Ramones, The Stones, The Stooges, The Temptations, Heart, Bowie, Jack White) but it is SOOO DAMN GOOD that I just can't do it. Except...No J. Geils Band? Where the HELL is 'Blow Your Face Out'? Huh, Duff???

Duff also recommends a list of books for all men to read...and only A FEW of them are about Rock N' Roll. I'll personally add his first book to the list since he's apparently too humble to do it himself!

The absolute brilliance of McKagan's life lessons is summed up in these following words from a chapter about age and The Rolling Stones, "Don't Die Young, You'll Miss Out on Being Fifty":
"I believe we're staying younger longer because of rock and roll. Fifty is the new thirty-or, twenty-nine, really-because The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Iggy, and Motörhead keep touring."

Duff, like me, holds The Stones in high regard for continuing to perform live in concert. "We in the audience can see the creases, scars, warts, and all. They don't give a fuck and they are a quarter century older than I am. I'd be an asshole at this point to think fifty was anywhere close to old. The Stones have single-handedly raised the worldwide bar of how we, as men, think about ourselves in terms of age." HELL YEAH!

Men! Go NOW and get this book. (Or women: get it FOR THEM)
Stay humble, give thanks, never quit doing what you love and all the while ROCK ON!
Follow his lead, boys, and we can all slide headlong into our graves without regret screaming...
"Wow! What a ride!"

Just like Duff McKagan.

Quick and Bizarre Rock N' Roll Question:
Can ANYONE even fathom Michael Bolton as the lead singer for Black Sabbath?

Black Sabbath: Symptom of the Universe by Mick Wall poses this beauty and lays out years and years of drug and alcohol abuse, band in-fighting, mismanagement and financial ruin for the founding members of the mighty Black Sabbath.

If you enjoy reading a classic tale of Good vs. Evil with a sappy happy ending...
this new book is NOT for you!

Mick Wall, the UK's prolific and successful rock journalist, was actually a publicist for the infamous band in the early 1980's. At the raw age of 21 after working with bands like Journey, REO Speedwagon and Dire Straits, the PR agent felt like he was more than qualified to take care of Black Sabbath. But in the author's own words: "I was wrong."

The story of Black Sabbath is a long and sordid one from their humble beginnings in a rough Birmingham neighborhood to their years of shameful debauchery in Los Angeles. None of the four original members, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Bill Ward and Ozzy Osbourne, could have possibly even dreamed of the twisted fate that lay waiting for them in the music business.

Universally scorned by the critics, including Rolling Stone magazine who refused to even review most of their albums, the band battled to the top mostly by word of mouth in the early days. In February of 1970 upon the release of their first record straight in the Top 30, Ozzy admits "...and from that moment on, my life totally went off like a rocket!"

Touring, great songs and more touring led to a meteoric rise in fame. On the first American tour in October 1970, Sabbath was opening for Canned Heat, Alice Cooper and the James Gang. In these short weeks things really starting cooking for our anti-heroes. They opened for The Faces and wickedly won the crowd over "...then Rod Stewart came on and they began throwing things at him. It was just incredible." By November they were heading in Detroit!

Fame brought dissension and alcohol and cocaine. Still outcasts clouded with darkness and drugs, the band remained a rung below most of their contemporaries. 'Even Led Zeppelin, still being scolded as equally derivative heavy metal dogs of war, were considered cultured and not without charm compared to Black Sabbath.' According to Ozzy, "...other bands' roadies got better looking groupies than we did."

'The very top of the very bottom, baby.'

Wall chronicles the band throughout its various lineup incarnations, with Ian Gillian and of course Ronnie James Dio, but also follows the parallel tracks of Ozzy's successful solo career including some wonderful Randy Rhodes' stories. The stories of their management struggles aren't so wonderful.

As typical of the times, Black Sabbath was taken advantage of and completely used by managers, record company executives and lawyers. 'The band spent a fortune in legal fees only to discover that, in effect, they had no real money of their own. The cars, the houses and even the music were all owned by their management company. Don Arden and his daughter Sharon were brought in by Tony Iommi to step in and save them. Decades later, the original band members are still seeking common salvation.

Bill Ward drops his sad summary on the downfall of the band, "I think alcoholism and drug addiction played a great part in the breaking down of the union of Black Sabbath. I don't think it can be overlooked, that has to be acknowledged."

Black Sabbath remains one of the most influential Rock bands of all time and this biography does the group some mighty justice by heralding both the highs and the unseemly lows of life on the road.

It's a crying shame that the ride couldn't have been a straighter one.
Viv Albertine is always portrayed as a strong and powerful woman in the history books of Punk Rock music.

As a member of the spectacularly ground-breaking and explosive girl group The Slits, Albertine blazed a trail for the multitude of guitarists who desperately needed female role models to find their own voice in the music business. The Slits bashed their way on to the scene right alongside the Sex Pistols and The Clash during the late seventies and left an indelible impression during their short-lived career.

Now with the release of her captivating new autobiography, Viv Albertine thrusts herself back onto the scene with a strong and powerful story of perseverance.

CLOTHES, CLOTHES, CLOTHES.
MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC.
BOYS, BOYS, BOYS.
released by Thomas Dunne Books, is simply a must-read memoir for ALL Rock music fans.
With the very first sentence, Albertine lures in the reader with an honest and humorous declaration of her intentions:
-"Anyone who writes an autobiography is either a twat or broke. I'm a bit of both."
Or a bit of a genius...

Cleverly presented and formatted like a vinyl LP, the book reads almost as two separate stories.
"Side One" chronicles Albertine's rise and fall from the bright hot spotlight of fame. Growing up in a broken home in North London allows our heroine the opportunity to not only witness musical history in the making but to inject herself straight into it. Before she even turned sixteen, Viv witnessed The Rolling Stones play Hyde Park, followed Marc Bolan and T. Rex around London, and had been stepped on by David Bowie!
-"He's not as dainty as he looks."

But its after watching Johnny Rotten and the Sex Pistols live in concert that Albertine sees her destiny.
-"All the things I'm so embarrassed about, John's made into virtues...I think he's brave. A revolutionary. He's sending a very powerful message, the most powerful message anyone can ever transmit. Be yourself."

And with this new found sense of purpose and encouragement from her boyfriend Mick Jones (of The Clash), she's off to buy her first electric guitar. Albertine explains the revelation felt on the bus ride home from the music store, "Nobody knows I can't play it. At this moment in time, I look like a guitarist...For the first time in my life, I feel like myself."

Albertine informs her Mum that she's dropping out of college to play in a band, and the rest is history! Well, it should be noted that like in all great Rock N' Roll stories, Sex and Drugs tend to get in the way of success...and the story of The Slits is no exception. Toss in friendships with Sid Vicious ("...I think one of the most shocking things he's ever done is get involved with Nancy Spungen."), Chrissie Hynde ("...no one wants to be in a band with her, she's too good.") and Johnny Thunders ("It feels like we're meant to be together. If he wasn't a junkie...") and this book ROCKS!

"Side Two" of the book details Albertine's life after The Slits. It is here that we learn to empathize with the everyday struggles of her life and admire the stamina of this woman's battles with cervical cancer and a failed marriage. After years of being completely out of the public eye, with her confidence rattled and self-doubt sabotaging a potential return to the stage, Albertine is saved by the unconditional love of her daughter.
-" 'Mummy, you were born to play guitar.' That phrase, and the way she says it, sustains me for years."

I'm feeling nostalgic today.
Dad blogging...

Bringing me back to thoughts of a simple sheet of paper that
used to hang on our refrigerator door.

I made it myself...
I deemed it "refrigerator-door-worthy" myself...
I used to stare at it and wonder if anyone else did...
I still have it somewhere, the original DAD RULES.
I do believe its time to dig it back out and start living it again.
Last Friday Night...

Waiting for hours on a freezing cold Detroit City sidewalk...

Not for tickets, like in the past, but for an enviable spot...

At a General Admission J. Geils Band concert with my son...

Showing him the ropes for my job as RockStar Dad is almost done...

Complete with crazed diehards like myself swapping tales of old...

How this band once ruled our town with a vengeance like no other...

Detroit Breakdown Motor City Shakedown, amen my brother.

Wedged up front and dead center we warm and we Wait...

For Peter, Seth, Magic Dick, and DK but its not quite the same...

Somethings been whacked firmly and permanently from place...

A faceless drummer, two guitarists and a teleprompter on the stage...

The songs are still great but the Teeth of Time they don't care...

I know too much and over-analyze this Come Back Houseparty again.

I checked the marquee and it read the J. Geils Band not the D. Levine...

And for the first time I'm old and I'm sad and sure of two things...

Love Stinks for real and I miss seeing J. Geils the man.

Seventeen Years Ago...

Again with the Rock N' Roll road trips Going Back To Cali...

Golf and Best Friends and Cigars and The Stones...

In a really good place a downright fine and great place...

Flying first class with a bottomless gin and tonic glass..

Getting lost in an Oakland neighborhood not unlike Detroit...

Checking into our room to head straight for bar's last call...

Wondering why I had seen this video before.

Pacing myself drinking Diet Coke for a spell...

Some weird misunderstanding leaves my smoke crushed by a boot...

Worn by a Vietnam Vet with a chip and an attitude...

Sorted out in time for Pearl Jam to rock out...

Another famous opening act left to play second fiddle...

The Rolling Stones cross their Bridge arriving five feet from my seat.

Even with a parking lot Thief In The Night robbing us blind...

I continually and continuously live a charmed life...

For in the midst of it all, I high-five Mick Jagger.

Twenty Years Ago...

I arrived home from the airport exhausted just in time...

To hurriedly paint a Stones' tongue on my pumpkin and wait...

For tiny Trick or Treaters to beg while my mind was still gone...

Left back in California riding The Voodoo Lounge Tour bus...

Nearing the end of an old life unsure of starting a new life...

Yet inspired once again filled with Sympathy For The Devil...

And love for a Best Friend who never ever failed me.

Caring not for the next day the next week the next year...

Drinking too well and too much like I was long prone to do...

Holding strange hands and smiling and laughing with the skies...

Out of town in my element out of mind in my haze...

These guys are true heroes and wicked role models...

When all else crumbles the music's Love Is Strong and unfazed.

Jumping over the wall turning good tickets into great ones...

I'm on top of the world roaming floor seats like I own them...

It was Halloweek with The Stones at the Oakland Coliseum.

Twenty Five Years Ago...

Tickets deftly obtained by reentering the line after #1 SOLD OUT...

Back for Round Two with my best Los Angeles mate...

An indisputably pissed off Living Colour opens with a rant...

And tensions are high with bigotry and hate...

For Axl the Offender is no where to be found...

Only Izzy and Duff and Steven and Slash swagger out...

For an epic apology by the top hat on the perils of smack.

After the heroin ramblings I'm not sure it was Pro or it was Con...

But the message was delivered and the G n' R Show was on...

With a true Appetite For Destruction these guys lay to waste...

A hometown crowd whacked straight across the face...

Yet the monstrous stage remained solidly in place almost panting...

To welcome The Rolling Stones and their powerful musical embrace.

Had Keith Richards himself convinced the new kids to stick it out...

In Slash's own words...

"Nobody ever told us shit."
Twenty Five Years Ago...

With a ticket I waited over 5 hours in line to purchase...

Some old fashioned way on a cold sidewalk before dawn-break...

I arrive at the Coliseum for Night One like a gladiator alone...

Completely enthralled at the spectacle of old and new Rock Royalty...

Here, of course, for The Stones but Guns N' Roses battle valiantly...

Cussing and spitting and imploding in front of tens of thousands...

My first ever witness to a full blown break up on stage.

Axl quits and falls awkwardly from the stage into the sea of madness...

Seizing the moment and sprinting the Olympic track like he planned it...

Rock N' Fucking Roll almost from another planet...

Yet the Glimmer Twins leave nothing to the imagination...

Winning the night and the crowd and the world once again...

The Olympic Torch burning brightly like the ultimate cigarette lighter.

Avoiding a punk-ass mugging on the way back to my car...

No one was getting this Steel Wheels Denim jacket...

The merchandise stand took credit cards.

Thirty Two Years Ago...

In the back of a car driven by a friend of a friend...

Heading eastbound from East Lansing...

Road-tripping all too soon from my supposed new home...

To see Roger and Pete and John but no Keith...

In a Teenage Wasteland stupor state of mind...

Expecting brilliance under the Dome...

But getting muddled and manic darkness instead.

Eddie Money duly entertained...

Yet The Clash egregiously agitated...

"Welcome to the Pontiac Trash Can..."

And The Who battled to bash the place down...

Awaking inexplicably back in a dormitory bunk...

I shake off the cobwebs and the rust and the dust.

Rock is Dead, they say...

And we could have been should have been...

Long Live Rock.

On four of five sold out nights...

Reveling in the electric atmosphere of Pine Knob...

Perched on rainbow wall of painted rock-band logos...

Watching thousands of friends I do not know by name...

Leaping and Staggering and Dancing their way to the lawn...

To worship America's Greatest Live Band of All Time...

I find my strength and my peace and my place.

School is in and life is on and girls are an enigma...

But this place has become my Sanctuary...

And Seventeen feels like the long journey's end...

With Peter Wolf as my mentor, my guide and my light...

It's the One Last Kiss of summer...

And a Houseparty that must never ever end.

Thirty Three Years Ago...

The J. Geils Band and I were poised to rule the world...

And my Rock N' Roll die was cast.
Thirty Six Years Ago...

I lay burrowed in a dark brown bean bag chair...

In a room filled with flowery wallpaper and frilly bedding...

Sporting huge headphones that transported me to another dimension...

Hypnotized by the sounds that burned indelible images onto my brain...

Of dangerous love and gutters and discotheques and trash...

Of booze and pills and powders...

Of cocktail parties on the streets.

As the eight-track tape remained firmly lodged in place...

The awkward chunk of the switching regularly interrupted my utopia...

But only temporarily momentarily...

For I was days away from turning fourteen...

In the midst of the most complicated yet simplistic time of my life...

And The Rolling Stones were all that really mattered.

Thirty Six Years Ago...

Some things never change...

Except I need a new bean bag chair...

Motley Crue kicked off their Final Tour last night in Grand Rapids, MI...
and they bombed in a most spectacular D.O.A. train-wreck fashion unlike any mess I've ever seen.
Fire and Brimstone and Pure Disaster.

Here's a recap of the show, in my humble opinion...
Alice Cooper was phenomenal!

In a short opening set of just less than an hour, Alice ripped through hit after hit. He brought out his new guitarist and his snake. He looked great and sounded great. The band got a chance to show off, there was confetti, an electrocution and a beheading. All in a days work, Alice Cooper is the consummate showman and proved that Rock N' Roll is not dead. But perhaps I should re-phrase that...

The audience watched Alice die on stage TWICE last night.
Then we all watched in horror as the headliner died for real.

Its hard to put into words how horrible and unprofessional last evening's concert really was.
The show literally came to a GRINDING HALT three separate times.
The first stoppage came just three songs into the ridiculously loud set when Tommy Lee broke his bass drum. Well, that led to some Mick Mars noodling until he clearly got fed up and the entire band disappeared for about 10 minutes. "Tommy fucked that up!" said the team-player lead singer.

A few songs later, when the guitars went out Mick Mars screamed that he couldn't play because he had "no fucking ears" pointing to his malfunctioning earpiece monitor.

The band quickly lost the crowd during the third stoppage when it became apparent to all that this wasn't just a case of "first night jitters." After being set up in the Van Andel Arena for two weeks prior to this opening night, the show was clearly under-rehearsed and technically flawed. Again, I stress that Alice Cooper had ZERO problems with his set.

Motley Crue may have bit off more than they can chew with this monster stage and overblown production, with a show that is as fat and bloated as the lead singer. And I'm sorry, but does Vince Neil even know the lyrics to his own songs anymore? We've all know for years that he can't hit the high notes, but he holds the microphone out to the crowd to back him up on EVERY FUCKING SONG. It's a travesty that a front man can be this insulting to a paying audience. He publicly blamed everyone but himself for the show's problems last night. But here's a thought...take a look in the mirror Vince, if you can fit your inflated reflection into one, and take some heat for this debacle yourself. Learn the words to your own hit songs and actually sing them. Is that too much to ask?!

"I need to pray that we get through this set..." - Nikki Sixx onstage last night.
"They didn't..." - Me last night.

Motley Crue B Stage Encore

The only redeeming quality to the entire night was the encore B-Stage performance of 'Home Sweet Home'. When the band actually stripped down the bombastic noise and played their instruments, they sounded great. Too bad the entire show couldn't be like this.

Will they right this ship and fix the mistakes by this weekend? Probably not. Sorry folks in Milwaukee, but you better prepare yourselves for an expensive let-down. Don't worry though, the fire and smoke bombs will probably work properly.

Kudos also to the un-billed first band, the Raskins, who came on prior to the ticket's start time of 7:00pm. Sorry boys, I missed the first part of your set but the kickass closing run through The Stooges' "Search and Destroy" was epic! Well Done!

"All Bad Thing Must Come To An End" is one of their own taglines to this end run
Concert ReviewBeck fans in Detroit got a "Two For One" deal Saturday night when the scheduled opening act didn't show.
June 28th's concert at the fabulous Fox Theatre took on an air of uniqueness when an announcement was made around 8:45 to the rather antsy crowd…

Due to unforeseen circumstances(?), Beck would have to warm up the audience himself with an "acoustic" set before returning with his full "electric" set after a short intermission. A first in my book and I'm guessing by the ecstatic reaction inside the Fox that everyone seemed perfectly cool with the unexpected lineup change!

On With The Show!

With his full band, Beck ran through a 10 song set filled with slower numbers and new tunes. Posed with this bizarre position, he seemed in great spirits and the change-up really challenged the band to step up and deliver, which it did mightily! Beck even played a song that he wrote for Johnny Cash about 20 years ago, telling us that we've never heard it because he never sent actually sent it off to the Man in Black!

Yes, I've got a Devil's Haircut in my mind...

After a short break, Beck promised to rendezvous with us and come out with "guns blazing" and that's what he did with a power packed set filled with bombastic early versions of 'Devil's Haircut', 'Black Tambourine', 'Hell Yes' and 'The New Pollution'.

At one point deep in the evening, the dapper and slinky genius turned his back to the audience and stood in awe of his own band…"you guys are unbelievable!"

Beck and his band ROCKING Detroit!

It was a night full of surprises including the obligatory rock, funk, groove and pop mixed with giddy fun, quirky dancing and crime scene tape. It had been a while since Beck had been in town but judging by the reception, he should now know not to stay away so long.

Even with its 'Sexx Laws', Detroit Rock City is "Where It's At"!

And seriously, the Fox Theatre is a FABULOUS place!
But what is the deal with all the late-comers jammed up in the aisles at the start of every show??
Peter Wolf is THE COOLEST CAT ON THE PLANET!.
(with an exclamation point AND a period)

The Front Man extraordinaire played two sold out solo shows at The Ark in Ann Arbor on Sunday May 4th and Monday May 5th, proving once again that he's a Rock N' Roll force to be reckoned with. Backed by a stellar three-man version of 'The Midnight Travelers', Wolf played out and laid out the history of Rock, Soul, Blues and Funk, with some Country and Bluegrass mixed in for good measure, all in two hours time.

The J. Geils Band, Wolf's OTHER outfit, is so revered here in Detroit that Peter admitted he was nervous about performing these two shows without them. I can only imagine that he worried about the audience's ability to accept his presentation of mostly solo material in such an intimate setting without screaming for "Houseparty" or the "Southside Shuffle"!

If he ever doubted us before, he needn't worry anymore.
Wolf had the entire room eating out of the palm of his well-worn hand from the moment he leapt into the spotlight. From his trademark hair, fedora hat and skinny legs to his slinking stage-prowling swagger, this guy is the ultimate showman. I'm not sure that anyone else in the business could pull off what he did in Ann Arbor the last few nights. He looks great, he sounds great, he is great.

Both evenings were sublime, with Wolf telling stories between almost every song. The killer 400-seat venue quickly transformed into a living-room setting with Peter talking to us as old friends over old-stories of days gone by. Except his stories all involve spectacular settings and spectacular individuals like Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Muddy Waters, Tennessee Williams, Merle Haggard and Mick Jagger! What a life... I wonder if there is anyone famous left that Wolf hasn't shared a drink with?!

The set list was basically the same each night with solo gems like 'Growin' Pain', 'Long Way Back Again', 'Tragedy', 'Waiting On The Moon' and 'Long Line' mixed in with some crowd-pleasing Geils' numbers like 'Cry One More Time' and 'Give It To Me'. The Monday night crowd was treated to a few extra encores, including 'Start All Over' and it seemed as if Wolf didn't want the love-fest to end. But a few selections each night truly stood out...

'Five O'Clock Angel', the pet-name of Tennessee Williams' first drink of the day, is such a powerful and moving song and was presented so masterfully both nights that it pulled on my inner-demons and conjured up that deep, dark craving for alcohol. And I haven't even had a drink in almost a decade! Whoa.

Pre-Show at The Ark in Ann Arbor...Front Row!

'Nothing But The Wheel' and 'When Women Are Lonely' really let the band shine. Duke Levine is an artist on the guitars, banjo and mandolin with exceptional string-bending Telecaster skills and it was a pleasure to sit directly in front of him both nights watching him quietly work his magic. Marty "Dr. Jazz" Ballou on Stand Up Bass dropped the strong booming beat throughout the evening and Kevin Barry worked some ultra-cool lap steel guitar licks in as well as acting the foil for Wolf's crazy story-weaving antics.

We can only hope that Peter Wolf and The Midnight Travelers put out some promised new music in the near future. This group is capable of greatness and they deserve a continued run in the concert business.

To quote Wolf from the poignant 'Long Way Back Again' from his 1998 'Fool's Parade' album:
"It's a goodnight and all the stars are shining
I look back at the long old road a winding
And I just hope there's something there worth finding
It's a long way back again."

Thank you Peter Wolf, from the bottom of my heart.
Don't worry my friend, I thing you've got a future in this business yet.
